ALPR Retention and Automatic Deletion

Set parking retention around the purpose of each record, then test deletion across routine observations, held evidence and copies.

Should ordinary parking records be deleted after 24 to 48 hours?

There is no universal 24-to-48-hour retention period. Set deletion rules around the purpose of each record, separating routine observations from active sessions and evidence held for a reviewed matter.

The operator's applicable rules determine the schedule and its exceptions. The configured timer then needs testing against what actually disappears, including copies outside the main screen.

OAIC: APP 11 security and disposal guidance

Why digital records outlive the dashboard

Paper files had physical disposal routines. Digital observations can remain in caches, exports and backups after disappearing from a dashboard. Automated recognition adds volume, making disposal something that must be designed into the record lifecycle.

An ordinary observation and evidence attached to a dispute have different useful lives. Treating them as one category can either remove relevant material too early or keep unrelated visits unnecessarily.

Keep only what the purpose still needs

Short retention may suit a purpose that ends when a paid visit is reconciled. Keeping every image afterwards may be unnecessary. A specific dispute or records obligation can instead justify a separately assessed hold with restricted access.

UK ICO guidance links retention to necessity. Australian APP 11 guidance addresses destruction or de-identification when information is no longer needed, with exceptions. Neither supplies a single disposal period for every parking operator.

Test expiry, copies and holds together

A completed session could leave the routine queue while selected evidence for a disputed charge remains under a documented hold. Give that hold an owner and an end condition. Labelling every event a possible dispute undermines the distinction.

Test images, plate text, local queues, exports and backup restores separately. Removing a plate field is not necessarily de-identification if an account link or precise journey remains. Someone needs responsibility for verifying expiry and releasing holds when their purpose ends.

Aero Ranger retention and the exit window

Aero Ranger links customer-record retention to the agreement and configuration, including some continued holding and licensed processing after exit. Personal information is removed or de-identified when no longer needed, subject to applicable law.

Schedule 4's conditional 30-day export access is not a deletion deadline. Category-specific disposal and backup treatment need confirmation; the published material does not set a universal 24-to-48-hour purge for paying drivers.
