ALPR Anti-Passback Exception Review

A missed exit can look like duplicate entry. Plan anti-passback review and authorised resets around the limits of the recorded vehicle state.

What should anti-passback rules do with uncertainty?

Anti-passback rules need an exception path for missed exits, duplicate records and uncertain matches. Define the credential and boundary first, then provide authorised review and reset procedures so an unresolved observation does not create an unexplained lockout.

A plate string is not proof that the same physical vehicle made two movements. The rule represents the access policy using recorded state, and that state can be incomplete or stale when an observation or update is missing.

Inside or outside is a recorded state

Anti-passback arose around reusable credentials whose second entry conflicted with a recorded inside state. Using a plate changes the credential, not the underlying problem.

Missed exits, repeated messages and copied identifiers can still affect the record, so the resulting inside or outside value should be understood as an operating model rather than verified identity.

Use state checks only where the boundary supports them

State checks suit a defined boundary with movement records that support the chosen access policy. A physical credential, attendant review or alerts without automatic refusal may be more appropriate.

If the site only needs observations, anti-passback may be unnecessary; adding it does not by itself establish that a plate has been copied or access shared.

Review a missed exit before resetting access

Decide whether state follows the vehicle, account or credential and which lanes update it. Test missed exits, offline updates, messages arriving out of order and authorised replacement vehicles. Review the image and existing state before treating a second entry as access sharing, with a documented permission, reason and audit record for any reset.

A missed exit followed by a genuine return can look like duplicate entry even though only one vehicle used the credential. That example should be part of acceptance testing. Also establish how a corrected state reaches the external controller, and keep emergency release independent of an old inside or outside value that has not yet been reconciled.

Check which reset actions CORE Audit Logs records

Aero Ranger CORE Audit Logs provides a central history of system actions and changes. It is relevant to examining a reset or disputed sequence when those actions are recorded in the deployment.

Exactly which events are logged, and how the external access system manages state, still need checking. Audit history does not establish a native anti-passback controller or prevent physical copying of plates.
