Close-Following Vehicles in ALPR Lanes

When vehicles follow closely, separate the movement evidence from gate safety and leave uncertain parking sessions open to review.

What happens when two vehicles follow closely?

Two closely spaced vehicles need separate movement records wherever the evidence supports them. Test that sequence with the gate specialist under a controlled plan, while keeping the gate's protective behaviour independent of any suspected access breach.

A barrier opening, a detector transition and a plate read describe different events. Their timing may overlap, but that does not make them interchangeable. Recognition software alone should not be treated as a complete way to prevent close-following entry.

One opening is not one vehicle

The issue predates cameras. With tokens or staffed barriers, one authorised opening could admit a second vehicle.

ALPR adds observations, but the relationship between the opening and each vehicle still has to be established. A second car in the sequence is not automatically evidence of an unauthorised visit.

Decide whether records or physical separation are needed

Separate records matter when close-following traffic affects access review or parking reconciliation. Wider spacing, an attendant or a different lane layout may be appropriate alternatives to extra recognition rules.

At an open site, reviewed movement records may be sufficient. Any physical prevention measure needs its own specialist assessment of the lane and equipment.

Read the movement sequence before changing a session

Compare controller logs, detector transitions and camera images during the trial. Look for a rear plate hidden by the leading vehicle and for event suppression that merges nearby detections. Keep source identifiers and timestamps so a reviewer can distinguish a repeated message from another vehicle, rather than relying on the number of messages alone.

For example, two detector transitions with only one readable plate leave a second movement unresolved. Assigning both cars to the first registration conceals that uncertainty. Staff need a documented way to investigate and correct the records, and must never command a gate to close on traffic as a response to suspected tailgating.

Use RackLink observations to review the sequence

Aero Ranger RackLink processes supported RTSP streams locally and supplies structured sightings to CORE review workflows. This can support an examination of the vehicle sequence using existing CCTV.

Camera viewpoints, stream quality and event handling need assessment for the proposed deployment. The documented product does not establish a dedicated tailgating detector or a safety-rated barrier response; evidence review and machinery safety remain separate responsibilities.
