What should ALPR privacy signage communicate?

A privacy notice should make the collection understandable at the actual site: who operates it, why plates are recorded and where to find more information. Wording and placement need review against the applicable local requirements.

Privacy information, payment conditions and safe road use serve different purposes. A single global sign template cannot settle all three, and a long paragraph is of little help if drivers encounter it after capture.

UK ICO: ALPR signage considerations

The entrance sign has another job now

Traditional parking signs explained tariffs or eligibility. Recognition systems add another message: vehicle information is being collected for specified purposes. Combining everything on one board can make both the parking conditions and the privacy message difficult to understand.

Layered information separates a visible initial notice from fuller detail about processing. The first layer still needs to arrive where it is useful, rather than relying on a visitor eventually reaching the payment machine.

A website supports the physical notice

A website can explain retention, recipients and request rights, but may not replace a physical notice. Provide a way to obtain fuller information without a smartphone, and consider whether fewer cameras or another capture position would simplify the collection.

UK ICO guidance calls for clear, visible information about ALPR and the responsible operator. It is UK-specific and marked under review following the Data (Use and Access) Act, so current local wording still needs checking.

Place the notice against the capture map

Mark the first capture point and public approaches on a plan, then inspect visibility under actual approach conditions. Keep installation photographs. Review the notice when coverage, recipients or purposes change, so the explanation continues to match the deployment.

For example, a notice describing payment reconciliation alone would be incomplete if the same records also feed a separately authorised security workflow. The shorter entrance message and fuller notice should describe the same underlying purposes.

COREconnect context and the customer's notices

COREconnect maps supported camera events to configured zones and retains source context. That helps explain where collection enters the workflow. Aero Ranger's policy assigns collection notices to the customer, making the deployment details important to the wording.

The exact camera, firmware and event interface need confirmation. Align the approved notice with that arrangement; COREconnect does not supply universal legal wording for every site or use.
